The Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation GAL benefit was fantastic! I got an opportunity to catch up with friends I haven’t seen in a while and meet new friends all in the name of promoting Guardian Ad Litem work. It was a wonderful evening contributing to our community and supporting nonprofits – and all while on the beautiful rooftop of Ponce City Market!
Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation (AVLF) is a non-profit organization that does amazing work serving those without or with limited access to needed legal services and one of my favorite programs is their Safe and Stable Families Project. Guardians ad Litem are attorneys who are appointed by the Court to investigate a family dynamic and issues related to the children to assist in determining what custodial arrangement is in the best interest of the children involved.
I am proud to be a Gold Level sponsor for the 2019 Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation (AVLF)’s Guardian ad Litem Benefit. I encourage and support their work! Since I started law school and once they let me into the Courtroom, I have always had a pledge to myself to always have at least one pro bono case pending at all times. I assist with AVLF trainings for new Guardians ad Litems, and I financially support AVLF. I encourage everyone to join me in supporting this wonderful foundation because it is important for us to give back and empower others, and it is a great feeling to know that you are contributing to crucial work being done in your community. I actively serve as a Guardian ad Litem, both privately and on a pro bono basis with AVLF. The work can be very hard and it is these cases and the kids involved whom you lose nights of sleep worrying over. Although these cases have been some of my toughest cases, they have also been my most rewarding. AVLF recruits and trains private lawyers to serve as Guardians ad Litem at no cost to the parties to help children in divided households. This work is particularly important to me. My practice, no matter the role in which I am serving (attorney, GAL or mediator), is focused on the children involved. I handle mostly high conflict contested custody cases, often dealing with complicated issues related to accusations of misconduct, serious mental health concerns, children with special needs, and other unique circumstances. I do my best every day to do good and practice with a focus on children.
AVLF and the Guardians ad Litem who participate in the Safe and Stable Families Project work endlessly to ensure the children in these cases have a voice advocating for their best interest. This work is certainly something to be celebrated, and it was nice to take an evening to do just that. Thank you AVLF for hosting a great benefit!
